From a program of Auto Mechanics, cooperatively shared by the Springfield and the Sleepy Eye school district in 1971-72,
the seeds were planted for cooperative educational plan that has produced the Cottonwood River Technical Center.
Beginning as a class serving about a dozen students, the Cottonwood River Technical Center has grown to a vocational program
serving 180 shared-time students from Cedar Mountain, Springfield, Sleepy Eye, Lamberton and Sanborn as well as hundreds of people in the
adult programs through Southwestern Technical College.
The Cottonwood River Technical Center offers classes in Exploring Medical Careers,
Graphic Arts,      Auto Mechanics, Aviation and Construction Trades.
The main goal of the Cottonwood River Technical Center is to meet the needs of all the students interested abilities,
experience, and goals. 

Vocational programs at the Cottonwood River Technical Center provide education
and hands-on-learning that are not available at the home schools.

1.     In-depth exploration of occupations and life roles.

2.     To provide a smooth transition to post-secondary education programs by development of      occupational competencies

3. To develop competencies necessary for a chosen occupation. To help students plan purposeful and productive lives.

 Grades 11, 12     Prerequisite None     2-Credits 

Content Standard-Occupational Experience, Environmental Systems, Technical Reading 

Course Description-The objective if this program is to enable the student to perform certain basic skills, develop attitudes and competencies that will be beneficial at the entry level in the general automotive fields. This course will provide students with an opportunity, prior to graduation and entering the world of work or post-high school education, to explore the repair of engines, electrical, fuel, emission control and other various systems used on automobiles of today. The course content is so arranged that students will have an opportunity sometime during the program to work on automobiles owned by themselves or a member of the family. Owning of having access to an automobile is not a prerequisite of this course. 

 

AVIATION 

Grades 11, 12     Prerequisite-None     2 Credit 

Content Standard-Occupational Experiences, Technical systems, Technical Reading 

Course Description-Aviation Careers is a class concerned with communicating knowledge, skills and attitudes about aviation and aerospace activities. Objectives help to prepare students so that they may participate is a society strongly influenced by the growth of aviation and space exploration. It also helps in furnishing students with opportunities for career exploration in aviation and aerospace. Students will have the opportunity to help with the construction of an model airplane. Resource materials include films, filmstrips, guest speakers from the industry and periodicals. After completion of this course, students will be prepared to take the private pilot’s exam if they so desire. Some of the various types of optional activities of the Aviation Careers class is the opportunity to have hands-on experience in a real airplane.

Content Standard-Career Investigation, Literary & Arts Creation & Performance 

Course Description-Pre-press will include formulating ideas, layout and design planning, composition with computer and/or mechanical (art) aids, camera film preparation and various camera techniques and offset press and screen image carrier preparation. IBM compatibles (Pentium II) systems are available. Software such as Corel Draw/Paint, Adobe Photo Deluxe, Microsoft Works are available for training throughout the year. With state of the art technology, the computer lab is networked together with availability to large graphic files, clipart libraries, CD-Rom, HP Laser Master (Direct to Plate)  AFGA digital camera, Easy photo scanner, Scanrom transparency scanner & 11x17 cannon color printer. Some of the projects included in course are memo pads, letterhead, resume, business cards, T-shirt design, greeting cards, decals & bumper stickers, glass etching & optional graduation announcements.

Content Standard-Career Investigation and Technical Writing 

Course Description-Knowing that the ideal time to begin preparing for a health care career is in high school, the Exploring Medical Careers class is designed to assist you in gaining knowledge about more than 200 health related careers through lecture, related hands-on skills and shadowing experiences You will have the opportunity to learn anatomy, medical terminology and health skills. With the use of computers and updated medical textbooks, speakers, tours and work experience possibilities through shadowing, you will become knowledgeable in the areas that you find interesting. You will be able to identify body organs and define their purpose with the use if dissection, use proper medical terms and gain and an ability to identify provide the health care industry with more qualified, motivated and confident health care professionals.
