Melges Bakery
This wonderful historic building has survived since the Civil War. The exterior is essentially unchanged. It was built by John Spenner and Henry Spoerhouse for their meat market business in 1865. The venture was of short duration. Just a few months later, Spenner was killed in a knife fight at the National Saloon on Christmas Day by two fur trappers from Mankato. The incident became known as the New Ulm Christmas Murders. This fatal incident began with holiday merriment but became ugly and violent during arguments over the recent Sioux Uprising.
The building was then purchased by Frederick G. Melges who converted the building into a bakery. The Melges Family continued to successfully operate the bakery for many years.
The Bakery Building is one of the last of the original business buildings in New Ulm. We hope that it will survive and provide enjoyment for all for many years.
