Vernard Helget, 76, died Tuesday, July 10, 2001, at Methodist Hospital, Rochester.
Mass of Christian burial is 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sleepy Eye, with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m.Thursday and 7:30-9:30 a.m. Friday at Sturm Funeral Home, Sleepy Eye. A Christian Mothers Rosary is at 4 p.m. and a parish prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
He is survived by his wife, Delores of Sleepy Eye; children, Ronald and wife Gloria of Sleepy Eye, Mary Ann and husband Richard Krebs of Sleepy Eye, Linda and husband Scott Peterson of Sleepy Eye, Larry of Sleepy Eye, Lori and husband Thomas Deibele of Sleepy Eye, and Kathy and husband Craig Larson of Hanska; 14 grandchildren; five great grandchildren; brother Edwin of Sleepy Eye; sisters, Adella and husband Raymond Tauer of Hanska and Lucille and husband Robert Brand of New Ulm; sister-in-law Donna Helget of Sleepy Eye, and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister and brother-in-law Elvira and Stanley Wiltscheck; brother Marvin Helget and sister-in-law Alice Helget.
He was born March 20, 1925, in Stark Township, Brown County, to Louie and Mary (Haala) Helget. He grew up and attended country school in Stark Township and later St. Mary's School in Sleepy Eye. He married Delores Schmid on Aug. 8, 1945, in New Ulm. They lived and farmed in Home Township for many years, later retiring and moving to Sleepy Eye. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, the Sleepy Eye Eagles and a card club.
