Gertrude C. Hillesheim, 80 ,of Sleepy Eye, Minn., died Sunday, May 4, 2003, at Bethesda Rehab Hospital in St. Paul,

Service will be held at St. Mary's Catholic Church on Friday, May 9, 2003 at 11 a.m., with Fr. Brian Oestreich officiating. Interment will be at the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery.

Visitation will be at Sturm Funeral Home on Thursday, May 8 from 4-8 p.m., and on Friday May 9, from 7:30-10 a.m. There will be a Christian Mothers Rosary at 4 p.m. and a parish prayer service at 7 p.m., Thursday at the funeral home.

Gertrude Catherine was born on May 3, 1923, in Mulligan Township, Brown County, the daughter of Joseph and Theresa (Schumacher) Fischer. She grew up on the family farm and attended District 42 Mulligan Township Country School and attended St. Mary's High School in Sleepy Eye. Gertrude married Kenneth Hillesheim on Nov. 18, 1947, at the Church of the Japanese Martyrs in Leavenworth. They resided in the Leavenworth area for several years and then moved to Sleepy Eye in 1960. Gertrude was a housewife and worked various jobs outside the home. She worked for the Pietrus Food Co. until she retired. She was a member of the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye, the Christian Mothers, CCW and Divine Providence Auxiliary. Gertrude enjoyed knitting and crocheting, playing the guitar, sewing for her family and doing crossword puzzles. She collected angels and was a Medjugorje follower.

She is survived by children, Barbara and Timothy Kleiter of St. Paul, Carol Hillesheim of Burnsville, Michael and Marian Hillesheim of Maple Grove, Patrick Hillesheim of Sleepy Eye, Marilyn and Mike Schauman of Sleepy Eye, Joanna and Jeff Schmid of Sleepy Eye, Kenwyn and Rich Evers of Olivia, Maggie and Jim Schroepfer of Sleepy Eye and Robert and Dana Hillesheim of Buffalo Lake; 15 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters; Elizabeth Fischer of Springfield, Josephine Lang of Springfield, Teresa Fischer of Minneapolis, Dorothy Fischer of Mankato, Valentine Fischer of Minneapolis, sister-in-law, Jean Fischer of Sioux Falls, S.D., and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Kenneth W. Hillesheim; brothers, Alfred and John Fischer; and sister, Sr. Mryna (Margaret) Fischer.
