James Florian Hillesheim, 83 ,of Sleepy Eye, MN died on Wednesday, April 7, 2004 at his home in Sleepy Eye, MN.

Visitation will be on Monday, April 12, 2004 from 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM and on Tuesday from 7:30 AM to 10:00 AM at the Sturm Funeral Home in Sleepy Eye, MN. There will be a KC Rosary on Monday at 5:00 PM and a Parish Prayer Service on Monday at 6:00 PM at the Sturm Funeral Home in Sleepy Eye.

Service will be held at Church of the Japanese Martyrs in Leavenworth on Tuesday, April 13, 2004 at 11:00 AM. The Clergy will be Father Todd Petersen. Interment will be at the Church of the Japanese Martyrs Cemetery in Leavenworth. Military rites performed by the Sleepy Eye Honor Guard. James Florian Hillesheim was born on May 14, 1920 in Mulligan Township, Brown County, MN, the son of John H. and Bertha (Sellner) Hillesheim. James attended country school, District # 70 in Mulligan Township. He farmed with his father until attending vocational school in Kansas City, MO. Upon graduation he was employed with the Bel Air for two years in Buffalo, NY then an additional two years in Niagara Falls, NY as a supervisor in assembling airplanes. He was drafted out of Bel Air into the Army Air Corps and served stateside for two years during WWII. James resumed farming with his father at the homestead in Mulligan Township upon his honorable discharge from the service. James married Rosella Theresa Schroepfer on November 21, 1950 at the Church of the Japanese Martyrs in Leavenworth, MN. After marriage they resided and worked on the farm with his father. James and Rosella moved to Sleepy Eye upon retirement in the fall of 1986. James was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye, the Knights of Columbus, and the Catholic Aid Society of Leavenworth. James enjoyed working in the shop, building, country music, storytelling, and spending time her loved ones; both family and friends.

James was called to his heavenly home on Wednesday, April 7, 2004 at the age of 83 years. He died peacefully in his home due to complications of bone cancer.

He is survived by his wife Rosella Theresa (Schroepfer) Hillesheim; children - Beverly and husband Steve Soukup of New Ulm, James H. and wife Cindy Hillesheim of Springfield, John and wife Lorraine Hillesheim of Sleepy Eye, and Christina and husband Chris Hopp of New Ulm; 3 step daughters - Bernetta and husband Ronald Helget of Comfrey, Carol and husband Pat Wurtzberger of Sleepy Eye, and Diane and husband Elroy (Si) Seifert of New Ulm; 22 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; sisters - Helen Helget of Sleepy Eye and Florence Seidl of Faribault. James was preceded in death by his parents; his brother - Edmund Hillesheim; and his sisters - Agnes Treml and Marie Mathiowetz.
