Arthur J. Mathiowetz, 79, of Comfrey, MN, died Thursday, March 6, 2003, at Springfield Medical Center in Springfield, MN.

Services will be Monday, March 10, 2003 at 10 a.m. at the Church of the Japanese Martyrs, Leavenworth, MN, with Fr. Todd Petersen officiating. Interment will be in Japanese Martyrs Cemetery, Leavenworth, MN Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Sunday with a parish prayer service at 5 p.m., and on Monday, from 7:30 to 9 a.m., all at the Sturm Funeral Home in Sleepy Eye, MN.

Art was born on February 26, 1924 in rural Mulligan Township, Brown County, MN to Bard and Theresa (Reminger) Mathiowetz. He grew up and attended country school in Mulligan Township. After he completed his schooling, Art worked on the family farm. He married Winnifred Zwaschka on May 3, 1948 at St. Paul's in Comfrey. The couple farmed and operated a seed corn and trucking business until retiring. He was a life long member of the Church of the Japanese Martyrs in Leavenworth. He served on several church and community boards. He enjoyed bowling, playing cards, old time music, watching Vikings and Twins games and umpiring for various baseball and softball leagues.

Art is survived by his wife of nearly 55 years, Winnifred; children; Linda Friesen of Comfrey, Mike and Cheryl Mathiowetz of Comfrey, Dale and Mary Mathiowetz of Fox Lake, IL and Renae and Bruce Lammers of New Ulm; grandchildren, Jeremy and Lindsay Friesen, Ryan Mathiowetz and fiance April, Dustin Mathiowetz, Katie, Josh and Megan Mathiowetz, brothers, Ethelbert and Agnes of Sleepy Eye, Tony and Phyllis of Hopkins, sister, Marie Cook of Sleepy Eye, sisters-in-law, Rose Nachreiner of Sleepy Eye, Ruth of Hastings, Mary of Sleepy Eye, Ida of Comfrey, Lucille of Springfield and Arlene Ebilsisor of Sleepy Eye. He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter, Sharon, sister, Theresa Nachreiner, brothers, Raymond, Wendelin, Ambrose, Alfred, Joseph, Leo and Leonard, brothers-in-law, Hugo Nachreiner and Wilfred Cook.
