George J. Mathiowetz, 88, of Wabasso, died Saturday at the Springfield Medical Center in Springfield.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday from the St. Anne's Catholic Church in Wabasso with burial in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Monday and Tuesday one hour prior to services at the church A parish service will be held 7:30 p.m. Monday at the church.

The Sunset Funeral Home of Wabasso is handling the arrangements.

He is survived by his wife, Agatha, five children, Linus Mathiowetz and his wife Marcella of Wabasso, Marie Barrington and her husband John of Batavia, Ill., William Mathiowetz and his wife Lois of Renville, LeRoy Mathiowetz and his wife LaVonne of Wabasso and Curt Mathiowetz and his wife Karen of Wabasso; 21 grandchildren and 10 great- grandchildren. Also surviving are brothers, Martin Mathiowetz of Redwood Falls, Lawrence Mathiowetz and his wife Ruth of Richland, Wash., Andrew Mathiowetz and his wife Veronica of Morgan and Paul Mathiowetz of Milwaukee, Wis.; a sister Anna Zinniel of Winnebago.

He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter, Patricia Schueller in 1995; brother, Francis; sister Estelle; two brothers and a sister in infancy.

He was born Sept. 4, 1911 in Eden Township to Frank and Margarette (Rusch) Mathiowetz. He grew up on the family farm in Eden and attended country school and also the St. Mary's Parochial School in Sleepy Eye. On May 14, 1935 he married Agatha Heiderscheidt in the St. Michael's Catholic Church in Morgan. They farmed in the area until moving to a farm in Vail Township where he continued to farm. In 1992, they moved to Wabasso. He was a member St. Anne's and the St. George Society. George served many years on the Vail Township Board.
