DOROTHY M. HILL
Funeral services for Dorothy
Hill, 87, of Cherokee, will be Thursday, January 6, 2011, at 1:30 P.M.,
at the First United Methodist Church in Aurelia, with Pastor Missy Brown
officiating. Burial will be in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, rural
Aurelia. Visitation will be Wednesday from 2:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M., with
the family present from 5:00 to 7:00, at the Redig Funeral Home in
Aurelia.
Dorothy Mae Tharp was born January 28, 1923,
near Leeds, Iowa, the daughter of Wayne and Ruth (Wingeier) Tharp. She
attended and graduated from school in Sutherland, Iowa. She went on to
work in banking in Nebraska. Upon returning to Iowa she married Wendell
L. Hill on March 17, 1946. She and her husband began farming in Afton
Township and soon after moved to a farm in Pitcher Township in Cherokee
County, where they made their permanent home. Dorothy retired from
Wilson Foods in Cherokee, as a bookkeeper, in 1988.
Dorothy was a world-wide traveler. Her
travels took her to beautiful places in Alaska, through Europe, Hawaii,
and fishing excursions in Mexico, Canada and Florida. She also traveled
extensively in the United States, as a member of the TOPS club.
Dorothy died in her residence at The Gardens
Retirement Community of Cherokee on Sunday, January 2, 2011.
Preceding Dorothy in death were her parents,
her husband Wendell on November 14, 1991, her daughter Cinda Bettin on
December 15, 2006, her sisters Bernice Tharp and Inez Adams, and her
brothers Robert and Elvin “Bud” Tharp.
Survivors include her
daughter Susan and her husband Dave Wieland of Kansas City, MO, her son
John and his wife Midge Hill of Cherokee, her grandchildren Jade Bettin,
Cale Bettin, Nicole Wieland, Kyle Hill and Garrett Hill. Also surviving
is her sister Evelyn Reiste of Ocheyedan, IA, her son-in-law Mark Bettin
of Odebolt, and other relatives, friends and neighbors.
