EDGAR ALLEN
Funeral
services for Edgar D. Allen, 87, of Aurelia will be Tuesday, November
23, 2010, at 1:30 P.M. at the First United Methodist Church in Aurelia,
with Pastor Missy Brown officiating. Burial will be in the Pleasant Hill
Cemetery, rural Aurelia. Visitation will be Monday from 2:00 P.M. until
7:00 P.M., with the family present from 5:00 to 7:00, at the Redig
Funeral Home in Aurelia.
Edgar died
on Saturday, November 20, 2010, at the Cherokee Regional Medical Center
in Cherokee.
Edgar Dean
Allen was born July 4, 1923, the son of Wilbur and Irma (Hiersche) Allen
in Sac City, IA. He attended school in Sac City, at High View, Afton,
Brooke, and graduated from the Aurelia High School in 1940. On July 4,
1943 Edgar married Viola L. Fierk at the Congregational Church in
Aurelia. He served in the US Army Air Corps as a radio operator on
B-29’s on the island of Tinian, with the rank of Staff Sgt. Edgar farmed
until 1959 at which time he began a career as a salesman; first in
insurance and finally as an automobile salesman retiring in 1981. A
lifelong member of the United Methodist Church, he served in numerous
positions beginning with Sunday school superintendent just after
graduating from high school. He also served at various times as a board
member and Sunday school teacher.
Edgar was a
member of Farm Bureau, Aurelia Kiwanis Club, American Legion Post #390,
had served on City Council, and was one of six founders of the Aurelia
Golf Club. He enjoyed golfing, motor cycles, boating, playing cards,
watching children in sports, and his grandchildren and
great-grandchildren. For more than 20 years they wintered in Sun City,
AZ.
Preceding
Edgar in death were his parents, one brother, Russell Allen, and one
sister, Celesta Edwards.
Survivors
include his wife Viola of Aurelia, three children, Mike and his wife
Judy Allen of Kingsley, IA, Denise Twiford and friend Kent Husted of
Sioux City, IA, and David and his wife Linda Allen of Boerne, TX, nine
grandchildren, Tara and husband Scott Sobek of Kanawha, IA, Ben and wife
Kerri Edwards of Harrisburg, SD, Jennifer Zimmerman of Sioux City, Shawn
Twiford of Sioux City, Chris and wife Faye Allen of Ankeny, IA, Douglas
Allen of Alta, Danielle and husband Fred Jackson of Hamburg, NY, Alison
Spangler of San Antonio, TX, and Kevin Spangler of Eugene, OR, twelve
great-grandchildren, sister-in-law Kathleen Allen of Aurelia,
brother-in-law Dick Edwards of Storm Lake, nieces and nephews, and other
relatives and friends.
