Funeral services for Merlin
Hasenwinkel, 82, of Aurelia, will be 10:00 A.M. Thursday, May 18, 2006
at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Aurelia, with Pastor Larry Lemke
officiating. Burial will be in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, north of
Aurelia. Visitation will be Wednesday from 2:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M., with
the family present from 6:00 to 8:00, at the Redig Funeral Home in
Aurelia.
Merlin died Sunday, May 14,
2006, at his home in Aurelia.
Merlin Fredrick Hasenwinkel was born
December 25, 1923, the son of Fredrick and Emma (Zorn) Hasenwinkel in
Aurelia, IA. He attended country school then high school in Aurelia.
Merlin served his country in the United States Army from January 6, 1945
until his discharge on November 27, 1946. On January 10, 1947 Merlin
married Frances Hesse at the Immanuel Lutheran Church north of Aurelia.
They farmed until 1966. Merlin then worked at Wilson Foods in Cherokee
for 23 ½ years until his retirement in 1989. He was a member of
American Legion Post #390, St. Paul Lutheran Church where he held many
offices, and played Dartball. He enjoyed fishing, woodworking, word
puzzles, playing cards, and collected John Deere memorabilia. Merlin
loved spending time with family and friends and watching TV, especially
the Atlanta Braves.
Preceding Merlin in death were
his parents, two brothers, Ray and Lee Hasenwinkel, one sister, Dorothy
Golnitz, and one grandson, Cody Hasenwinkel.
Survivors include his wife Frances of Aurelia, five children; Rod and
his wife Cheri Hasenwinkel of Aurelia, Elaine and her husband Greg
Randolph of Eagan, MN, Larry and his wife Sue Hasenwinkel of Hurricane,
UT, Bonnie and her husband Dan James of Larrabee, IA, and Daryl and his
wife Teresa Hasenwinkel of Mesa, AZ. Also surviving are ten
grandchildren; Allison and husband Craig Wisniewski of Osceola, IA,
Molli Hasenwinkel of Aurelia, MM3 Scott Hasenwinkel of Kittery, ME, Nick
and Zack Hasenwinkel both of Hurricane, UT, Corinne and husband Todd
Peters of Cherokee, Jeremiah and wife Jessica James of Sutherland, IA,
Bobbi James of Larrabee, IA, and Luke and Allie Hasenwinkel both of
Mesa, AZ, five great-grandchildren; Hannah Wisniewski of Osceola, Cara
and Nicole Peters of Cherokee, and Hunter Moss and Hailee James of
Sutherland, one sister, Emily and husband Elmer Otte of Primghar, IA,
one brother-in-law, Herb and wife Phyllis Golnitz of Hawick, MN, two
sisters-in-law, Muriel Hasenwinkel of Cherokee and Betty Hesse of LeMars,
and other relatives and friends.
