Timothy Oren Coombs was born
November 14, 1949, the son of Oren and Marian (Patten) Coombs in
Cherokee. He graduated from the Aurelia High School in 1968. On January
5, 1969, Tim married Carol J. Ballantyne. He worked for Wilson’s Foods
from 1969 to 1975. He and Carol lived on the farm until 1975. He was
confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church on March 27, 1977. Tim farmed and
raised sheep for several years. He drove semi and worked for Brower
Construction in Sioux City. In 1984 he joined the U.S. Army where he
served in Desert Storm. An accident resulted in his medical discharge
from the service, returning him to Aurelia where he raised horses on the
farm with his mother for about 15 years. During this time he attended
North West Community College where he received his degrees in heavy
equipment and carpentry. Tim coached Little League, played softball,
enjoyed deer hunting, and loved his horses. His unfortunate bout with
Alzheimer’s led him to nursing homes in Sioux City, Remsen, and Aurelia.
Eventually he was transferred to the VA Home in Knoxville, IA, and he
currently lived at the VA Home in Des Moines.
