Funeral services for Wesley “Bud” Volkert,
83, of Aurelia, will be Friday, April 18, 2008, at 10:30 A.M. at the St.
Paul Lutheran Church in Aurelia with Pastor Larry Lemke officiating.
Burial will be in the Holstein Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday
from 3:30 until 8:00, with the family being present from 6:00 to 8:00,
at the Redig Funeral Home in Aurelia.
Wesley “Bud” Henry Volkert was born
September 30, 1924, the son of Henry and Alma (Hummel) Volkert south of
Cushing, Iowa. He attended Cushing Consolidated School and graduated in
1942. He was confirmed in the Cushing Lutheran Church. In 1944, he
moved, with his parents, to a farm south of Aurelia.
At the age of 19 he was drafted and served
in the Marine Corps from June 1, 1944 to May 22, 1946. He received the
Pacific Ocean Area Ribbon with one battle star, the Presidential Unit
Citation and the Purple Heart for being wounded in action.
On December 9, 1948 he married Dorothy Mae
Rohlk, of Ida Grove, at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Aurelia. They
farmed south of Aurelia for 26 years, and moved into Aurelia in December
of 1981.
Some of Bud’s fondest memories were of
pitching for the Cushing High School baseball team, as well as being a
member of the softball team that won the Pacific Ocean Area Championship
while he was stationed in Hawaii. He also loved to bowl and competed in
many tournaments across the United States. He was privileged to win the
singles division at the Seniors Tournament in Las Vegas twice, once
bowling right handed, and once bowling left handed. He was an avid
golfer, and enjoyed playing in tournaments and with his children and
grandchildren.
On April 15, 2008 Bud died at the Sunset
Knoll Care and Rehab Center in Aurelia.
Preceding Bud in death were his
parents, his wife Dorothy on August 28, 1990, and infant daughter, two
brothers, Ferd and Walter Volkert, and two sisters, Wilma Volkert and
Ardie Buck.
Survivors include one son, Stevan and his
wife Mary Volkert of Aurelia, and their three children: Chad and his
wife Wendy Volkert of Monroe, GA; Jeff and his wife Christina Volkert
and children Rayann and Kierstin of Holstein, and Stacy Volkert of Des
Moines, and one daughter, Denise and her husband Randy Nicodemus of
Aurelia, and their two children; Michael and his wife Angela Nicodemus
of Sioux City, and Angie Nicodemus also of Sioux City, his special
friend, Ruth Lill of Aurelia, one sister, Florence and her husband
Wesley Dreeszen of Holstein, and other relatives and friends.
